Traditional story character puppet making.

To link in with our theme about writing traditional tales we had a visit from Don Newton ‘The Puppet Man’. He showed the children how to make some superb puppets of characters from traditional tales… characters such as little pigs, giants, wolves and princesses.

Don demonstrated to the children how they would start with a template made out of an empty plastic milk bottle and two short sticks. Then as the day progressed they gradually added on features and colour using card, tissue paper and clear glue. Finally eyes, hair and other extras were added. The children had a brilliantly creative day and we are sure that you will agree that the results are stunning!

Don shows us how to get going…

We have the materials…

Then the fun begins…

Eventually we have the superb puppets!

2P’s Trip to Sharpham

On Thursday 16th May 2013, 2P went on a trip to Sharpham. At 9:30 we got on the coach, it took us 45 minutes to get there. The journey was very bumpy and twisty so some of us started feeling a little bit poorly! When we got off the coach we had to walk through a field covered in crunchy cow pats to get to the shelter.

When we got to the shelter we met Louie, Anna and John. We had to introduce ourselves by saying our name and our favourite animal, we even did actions! This is what we said; Lewis the cheeky chimpanzee, Charlotte the panther resting in the trees, Caitlin the chewing puppy, Taran the noisy monkey, Sophie the running hamster, Nyah the tall giraffe, Pharaoh the spotty cheetah, Harriet the nippy earwig, Holly the pouncing kitten, Jack the greedy gorilla, Ben the stomping elephant, Corey the cheeky monkey, Sam the noisy hamster, J the long necked giraffe, Cody the pouncing polar bear, Lola the squeaky guinea pig, Ellie the cheeky monkey, Caitlin the scratchy cat, Brooke the baby horse, Nancy the spitting spider, Adam the brilliant swimming otter, Chloe the scratching bear, Nathan the cute baby turtle, Jake the slow baby turtle and Archie the swimming otter.

We had a great time at Sharpham, we played lots of games and made blobbles out of clay.

Making The Right Choice

At school we have 4 values which we try to do all the time. This term we are thinking about ‘Making the Right Choice.’ This is important when we are playing and learning. For example, we need to make the right choice when we are playing with our friends or when the teacher is talking.

As a class we acted out making the wrong choice and then making the right choice.

Here are some photos of us acting!

In this picture Emily is asking the boys politely to be quiet so that she can hear the teacher. The boys are not making the right choice because they are not listening and they are stopping other children from learning.

In this picture Abigail and Ruby are snatching a chair off each other because they both want it. They are not making the right choice because one of them should go and get another chair.

In this photo Summer is looking crossly at Adam and Rebecca because they were fighting. They did not make the right choice. They should have left each other alone or asked an adult to help them sort it out.

We know that it is important that we make the right choice in the classroom, on the playground and at home.

Uh oh, friction in Year 2!

In Year two our Science topic is forces and friction. A force is what makes something move… push pull, twist, turn. Friction is what tries to stop this happening. We have been investigating how different surfaces create more or less friction when an object is pulled across them. First we looked at some virtual experiments on our Smartboard.

We used Newton meters to measure how much force was needed to pull a 200 gram weight across some different surfaces and each time recorded our results. At the end of the investigation we were able to arrange the surfaces in order from least to most friction. We tested material, plastic, thick card, thin card and foam.

A really important part of this investigation was to think about ‘fair testing’. This means that we only changed the surface each time and kept everything else the same.

The children worked really well as part of a team.

Incredible Instruments!

We made amazing musical instruments with a difference! We only used recycled junk but they look and sound pretty good!
